Ithaca Area Collaborative Law Professionals

AKA (Also Known As):
Ithaca Area Collaborative Law Professionals
Title:
President
Collaborative Law focuses on settling custody or visitation cases with legal counsel, but without court involvement, except to incorporate the final agreement into a court order. Negotiations take place in four-way conferences between parties and their attorneys. Additional professionals, such as financial planners and family specialists are added as needed. Each party has legal advice and advocacy during negotiations; each attorney is committed to guiding clients toward a reasonable settlement.
During the collaborative process, settlement is the only goal: no one, neither the parties nor the attorneys, can go to court or even threaten to go to court. If negotiations do break down, parties end the collaborative process. If either party wants to go to court, both must retain new attorneys. Intake: Prospective clients contact member attorneys to discuss a collaborative law case. Prospective clients eligible for county-funded assigned counsel must file a petition in Family Court, then fill out the assigned counsel application, indicating that they want a collaborative lawyer. A list of Participating Lawyers and other professionals in Tompkins County is available.

The Supreme Court is the only court with the authority to address matters related to the termination of a marriage, including separation, annulment and divorce.
